No time for fitness PDF Print E-mail

exercising_on_beachDear Karen, I seem to be so busy at this time of year, how can I get enough exercise? Regards, Julia.

Karen's Response

Dear Julia,

I’m glad that you recognise how important keeping physically active is, no matter how demanding things seem. The right level of activity depends on how active you are in the first place. The National Physical Activity Guidelines for Australians state:

1. Think of movement as an opportunity, not an inconvenience.
2. Be active every day in as many ways as you can.
3. Put together at least 30 minutes of moderate-intensity physical activity on most, preferably all days.
4. If you can, also enjoy some regular vigorous exercise for extra health and fitness.

This means that a 30-minute run is not essential – which is good news at this time of year when we’re all so busy. Being active in small ways throughout the day can help. Putting together shorter amounts, say three lots of 10 minutes of moderate activity, can also provide health benefits. This type of incidental activity may include taking the stairs instead of the escalator, not jostling for the closest park to the supermarket entrance and personally delivering a message to a work colleague in the neighbouring office, rather than emailing. Or setting up your exercise bike or treadmill in front of the TV!

Good luck Julia. I know how challenging it is to fit everything in at this time of year…but try and make time for you...You’re important as well

Kind regards,
Karen Inge.
