Bananas are high in fat.
- Caesar salad is high in fat.
- Drinking 8 glasses of water a day helps you lose weight.
- White bread is not good for you.
- Olive oil is lower in fat than other oils.
- Spinach is a good source of iron.
So, how many did you get right? Here are the answers.
- False. Bananas are high in energy giving carbohydrates and low in fat. Some people believe they are high in fat because of the creamy texture and sweet taste of the perfectly ripened banana.
- True. Caesar salad is laden with fat, providing a whopping 36 grams per serve. That’s more than a Big Mac or meat pie! The bacon, egg, fried croutons, anchovies soaked in oil, parmesan cheese and dressing all contribute to the fat content. In fact, the lettuce is the only real low fat ingredient in the entire dish.
- False. Drinking plenty of water is certainly good for you, but it has no magical properties to help melt away body fat. Drinking 6-8 glasses of water per day may help you control your weight indirectly, by helping to fill you up and reducing how much you eat.
- False. Most breads are low in fat and rich in energy giving carbohydrate, B-group vitamins, and some are now fortified with iron. There are even fibre-enriched white breads available, containing as much, or more, dietary fibre than wholemeal and wholegrain varieties. However, wholegrain and wholemeal breads have the goodness of the wholegrain which includes the germ as well as the bran layer giving you more vitamins, minerals, dietary fibre and other antioxidants naturally. It is important to include more wholegrains in your diet every day whether it's oats for breakfast, a fabulous rye bread sandwich for lunch and some cous cous with your mediterranean style dinner. Research shows that eating wholegrains reduces your risk of heart disease, diabetes and improves bowel function. Go Grains!
- False. Olive oil contains the same amount of fat as other oils. The type of fat is what makes it different to some other oils. It contains monounsaturated fat which helps to control blood cholesterol levels.
- Spinach does contain some iron, but it is in a form that is not readily absorbed by the body. To increase your absorption of the iron, eat spinach with foods rich in vitamin C, such as tomatoes and capsicum or orange juice.
